5. Motivational Interviewing: Supporting Self-Efficacy

About The Module:

Self-efficacy is a patient's belief that they can make changes in their lives. Your role is to help them believe that they can make these changes. In this lesson, you will:

  • Learn how to support a patient's self-efficacy, move them into a change plan, and have them commit to the plan
  • See an example of this technique in a clinical setting

At Duke's Healthy Lifestyles Clinic, a childhood obesity treatment center, Julia Wacker and her staff often use Motivational Interviewing to help patients make behavioral changes and move forward in the change process.

Committed to improving child health policies through physician advocacy, Ms. Wacker is the recipient of the Public Health Social Work Leadership Award and the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Award. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina's dual master's degree program in social work and public health.
