Module 11: Interactive - Sports Nutrition for the Teen Athlete


About The Module:

After participating in this lecture, you will be able to:

- Review the primary nutritional needs of adolescents with a focus on sports nutrition.
- Discuss the common performance supplement issues raised by parents and adolescent athletes.
- List the pros and cons of energy drinks.
- Utilize effective strategies when advising the high school athlete as to weight gain and weight loss, especially with regard to wrestling.
- Identify at least two information sources on supplements available to the teen athletes.

About The Speaker:

Dr. Richardson joined the medical practice of Mesa Pediatrics Professional Association (MPPA) in 1993 and is currently the president of that group located in Tempe, AZ. Mesa Pediatrics has 4 satellite offices in the Valley of the Sun. He serves additionally as the president of the East Valley Pediatric Society and a member of the board of directors of the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Following 3 years of active duty with the National Health Service Corps and the Indian Health Service, Dr. Richardson completed his residency at Columbus Children’s Hospital as chief resident and later as residency program director.

Continuous work with and on behalf of athletic children and youths included his role as one of Ohio State University’s team physicians. Additional work included his role as chairman of joint advisory committee for sports medicine for OHSAA and OATA. He currently volunteers as long-time team physician to South Mountain High School in Phoenix, AZ, and previously covered Chandler High School (AZ) as well as Hamilton High School and Linden McKinley High School in Ohio.

Dr. Richardson has a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in sports medicine and is a charter member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). A valued member of the former Gatorade Sports Science Institute, Dr. Richardson continues his teaching role as a sports medicine continuity clinic preceptor for Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
